"Chasing Voices" (2021) is a 57-minute PBS documentary exploring the life of John Peabody Harrington, an obsessive ethnologist who documented over 100 Native American languages. Directed by Daniel Golding, the film shows how Harrington’s massive, often hidden, collection of notes is now helping tribes revive lost languages.

John Peabody Harrington (1884–1961) was a Smithsonian linguist who dedicated 50 years to recording rapidly disappearing Native American languages across the U.S..

Harrington amassed over one million pages of notes and recordings, often working closely with the very last speakers of these languages.

While considered eccentric and obsessive, his work is currently used by tribal communities to bring "dormant" languages back to life.
