CPH:DOX Award 2007
Santa Fe Street
Director: Carmen Castillo
On 11 September 1973, president Allende was overthrown, and General Pinochet occupied the dictator's chair the following 17 years. Miguel Enriquez, the leader of the left-wing resistance movement MIR was killed, while his girlfriend, the highly pregnant Carmen, was left behind bleeding on the ground. She survived, but had to seek political asylum in France. It is only now, after many decades in exile, that she returns to revisit Calle Santa Fe, the street where she lived happily with Miguel before the inevitable disaster struck and she had to flee the country. Accompanied by Carmen, we are guided through the painful history of Chile. We meet others who, like her, had dedicated their lives to the battle for social justice and thereby forfeited a happy existence and the ability to live a peaceful life: women who had to leave their children in Europe to secretly return to fight after being called by MIR, an ageing mother and father who lost their three sons to the insurrection, women who remember the torture - how could one forget? - and how something inside them decided not to succumb. Behind all these destinies lies the gnawing question: were all the victims worth it? Calle Santa Fe portrays both a personal love story and the tragedy of Chile's suppressed and vanished people - a crushing story told by its survivors.
Amnesty Award 2007
No End in Sight
Director: Charles Ferguson
Charles Ferguson's 'No End in Sight' - which was named the most important American film of 2007 by Time Magazine - is a thorough analysis of over 200 hours of archive footage. Through, among other things, expert accounts, political considerations, interviews with American generals, soldiers and Iraqi civilians, the film shows that practically all the things that went wrong as a result of the American invasion of Iraq had been pointed out beforehand by the experts, whose task it was to predict the problems such a war may face. But the top-level political decision-makers didn't listen to the experts' advice. And this has had massive consequences, as it is now impossible to assess which mistakes will go down in the history books as the most fatal ones. How could president Bush, his administration and the Republican party ignore the experts' analyses and do the exact opposite of what they had been urged to do? Charles Ferguson doesn't have an answer, but he convincingly shows what went wrong, and who is responsible for it. The spectator is left with the sad and incomprehensible fact that there is no reasonable explanation. The film has shaken the Americans far into the Republican camp. So don't miss out on one of the most important films produced on the war in Iraq.
Sound & Vision Award 2007
Joy Division
Director: Grant Gee
In the aftermath of the snarling wave of punk that washed across Britain in the 1970s, four young and lanky boys formed their own band in 1976. They started with small, hot-tempered songs in pure Sex Pistols style, but after adopting the name Joy Division, they developed a more restrained, melancholy and distinctive sound. The band managed to release two groundbreaking albums, which went straight to the core of a whole generation of young, post punk romantics, before their lead singer, the merely 23-year-old Ian Curtis, hanged himself in 1980, the day before the band was set to go on a large tour through the United States. Today, 27 years later, Joy Division is seen as a milestone in British music, which is reflected in this year's supply of films: in another series of the festival programme we will present Anton Corbinj's 'Control' - and Grant Gee's Joy Division complements Corbjin's film perfectly. Using conversations with the band's surviving members and a row of associated people, among others the legendary founder of Factory Records, Tony Wilson, the director Grant Gee takes us on a fascinating trip through the grey and dismal suburbs of Manchester, where Joy Division originated and which, according to the film's clearly drawn conclusion, they elevated into modernity. Filled with ultra-rare sound and image clips and a graphic approach that elegantly corresponds with the Factory style, 'Joy Division' has become an enjoyable portrayal of a brilliant band. Grant Gee has previously made award-winning films about Radiohead and Gorillaz.

France 2007
Director: Gee-Jung Jun
At first glance you might think that you're watching an old film. It is a film which is almost undefinable time-wise, but no doubt old. There is the black and white film material, the lack of sound, the scratched surface, all of which obviously tells the story of a film that hasn't been kept under the right conditions. But yet there is something that doesn't make the bits fit together, something in the images that says something else. Small signs that say that what we're experiencing might be from the present. France 2007. But it is not a cunning illusion. For that, it is all too real. There are bodies, faces, gazes - turned directly at the camera - somewhere in France, but nonetheless evidently 'outside'. They are Romanians and Gypsies - people without a home, without papers and rights. And yet it is a film without victims, a film without a case that has to be fought, and a film that through its silence and aesthetic obscurity establishes a sense of distance, which enables the people in front of the camera to exist as human beings - independent from the history that will always haunt them.

Dust
Director: Hartmut Bitomsky
With 'Dust', the German documentary filmmaker Hartmut Bitomsky has made a close-up study of the appearance of dust; a study, which in every way underlines, how a very narrow focus can broaden ones perspective in the most powerful sense of the word. The film's basic problem, of course, is how to make something visible that lies exactly on the limit of what a human eye can perceive. Like an odd associative research project, the film taxonomically examines different types of dust. This rigid examination at the beginning of the film lays the foundation for what is later to become the film's thematic center of gravity: the penetrability of the human body. As the smallest visible element, dust is often something we experience as a part of something else, be it dirt, paint, dust clouds etc. Dust is often made of many different materials, and the ability of dust to move and intrude into places where it doesn't belong means that it can carry substances into ones body, which can change its chemical balance and not least cause diseases and life-threatening conditions. People who live in cities, for example, have another blood type than those who live in the countryside. The firemen on Ground Zero ended up bearing the effects of the collision between skyscrapers and low-flying aircrafts in their own bodies, resulting in highly threatening conditions. 'Dust' is brilliant, be it as a philosophical reflection, an aesthetic portrayal, or a concrete educational lesson. It is a film, which, like Bitmosky's other works, bears its greatness in both the coolly perceptive and the poetically invisible.

A Crime Against Art
Director: Hila Pelegy
'A Crime Against Art' is a film in six chapters based on a trial staged at an art fair in Madrid in February 2007. The trial is inspired by the mock trials organized by Andre Breton in the 1920s and 30s, and playfully raises a number of polemical issues about the world of contemporary art.
