Como sugerem que se traduza "mainland" quando se está a referir a um conjunto de ilhas? Por exemplo na seguinte frase:

"The Shetland Islands lie isolated from the British mainland..."

Mainland já de si quer dizer continental...

Mainland is usually the continental part of a region, as opposed to the islands nearby. Sometimes the residents are called "the Mainlanders". As a result of the usually larger area of mainland, there are significantly more mainlanders than islanders, and mainlander culture and politics sometimes threaten to dominate those of the islands from Wikipedia.

Os british é que têm a mania que são um continente... já daí vem a anedota: nevoreiro no canal da mancha, europa isolada de Inglaterra (ou lá como era).

Eu diria "encontram-se isoladas da Grã-Bretanha".

Este termo já me surgiu num outro documentário e eu contornei a questão de forma "habilidosa"
Aqui a questão é que existe o termo de "ilha continental" que é uma ilha ligada ao continente através da plataforma continental (que é o caso das Ilhas Britânicas) e o termo de "british mainland" que pressupõe um estatuto de superioridade por parte da ilha principal, a Grã-Bretanha, perante as restantes ilhas.
E eu não nunca sei a quais dos dois sentidos se estão a referir..

Neste momento estou mais inclinado para a expressão "ilhas continentais britânicas", mas talvez "ilha principal" não ficasse muito mal...
